GGU-RETAIN: "Sections" menu item¶
Upon selecting "Sheet pile wall" and "Using section list" you see a dialog box which appears almost exactly the same as that for soldier piles. Here, too, the "Steel design to EC 3" check box must be activated. The sheet pile wall sections can be stored in a ".spw_ggu" file.
If you do not design to EC 3, it is important to note that for sheet pile wall sections the area "A" must be entered in [cm²/m] and the moment of inertia "I" in [cm4/m]. Also note that the section values given in the table assume that a shear resistant connection exists between the supplied double sections. The variable S is the first moment of area of the section and s is the web thickness. The "alp" variable is the opening angle of the section. The value of "S·sin(alp)/s" is required for verification of shear stress.
If "Combined sheet pile wall" is selected, the sections dialog box is expanded slightly:

You can have new sections generated by the program using the "Generate tubular section" button. The new sections created here can be saved in a ".kom_ggu" file.
The "Generate HZM sections" button allows you to generate new combinations of king piles and infill piles and add them to the section list.
Section values of the combined sheet pile wall¶
For the combined sheet pile wall, A [cm²], I [cm⁴] and W,el, W,el* and W,pl [cm³] do not refer to one metre of wall, but to one load-bearing element: one king pile or, if "2P" is activated, the pair of king piles within the system width "b,sys" [m]. The infill piles are not included in these values. The program itself converts stiffness and self-weight to one metre of wall using b,sys and verifies the internal forces per load-bearing element.
The program does not determine the section values from the king pile and infill pile. For your own combinations, e.g. with an HEB section as king pile, enter the values of the load-bearing element in a new row of the section table.
"W,el*" is the elastic section modulus for the interlock verification. If it differs from W,el for an I beam section, the program carries out a normal stress verification using W,el* against the yield strength "fy (Interlock)" entered in the design dialog box, in addition to the normal stress verification of the king pile, and outputs the larger utilisation. If both values are equal, this verification is omitted.
Infill piles¶
GGU-RETAIN does not verify the infill piles. After the design, the program points out that a separate verification is required if the differential water pressure is greater than 4.00 m or the clear spacing between the load-bearing elements is greater than 1.50 m. The conditions under which this verification may be omitted in accordance with EAU 2012, E 7, Section 8.1.4.2 are displayed using the "Infill sheet info" button in the design dialog box.
